Ai Weiwei (China)<\/h2>

He is one of China\u2019s most prominent contemporary artists and activists, and is\nworld-renowned for his vocal criticism of the Chinese government\u2019s stance on\ndemocracy and human rights. Some of his works that tackled politics:


\n- Sunflower Seeds (2010):\n<\/i><\/b>It is a 100 million hand-painted porcelain \u201cSunflower seeds\u201d that\ncovered the entire floor of the Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London; each\nof these seeds was individually handcrafted by artisans. Visitors were\nencouraged to walk across the installation. These seeds are products of\nhours of hard work and detailed craftsmanship by skilled artisans, and\nthey challenge the idea of the Chinese public as a faceless,\nmass-produced collective. The project also functions as a critique of\nmodern labor, by using traditional imperial techniques to create a\ncommon seed, they mock the global view of China as a source of cheap,\ndisposable goods.


\nThis carries a profound political message regarding the\nindividual versus the collective. In China's history, the work subverts\nCultural Revolution propaganda, which often depicted Chairman Mao\nas the sun and the Chinese people as sunflowers turning toward him.\nBy inviting the audience to see these seeds as separate, handcrafted\nobjects, Ai Weiwei restores the \u201cindividuality\u201d of the Chinese citizens\nwho are often viewed by the world and their own government as an\nundifferentiated, obedient mass (Tate Modern Exhibition, 2010).


\n- Remember (2009):\n<\/i><\/b>This is also a public art installation that was made of 9,000 colorful\nschool backpacks on a museum wall. At first glance, everyone would be\nin awe of the work. But, behind that art lies a deep story. This art\ninstallation is to honor the thousands of children who died in the\nSichuan earthquake. According to Weiwie (2018), the Chinese\ngovernment censored and controlled all of the information about the\nearthquake, so people barely knew about the tragedy.

\nFurthermore, the installation is a critique of institutional transparency\nand freedom of speech. By placing the names and the scale of the\ntragedy on the global stage, Ai Weiwei bypassed domestic censorship to\ndemand justice internationally. This project was politically threatened\nwhen Ai Weiwei was physically assaulted by Chinese police during his\ninvestigation, leading to a life-threatening brain hemorrhage. This work\nis far more than an aesthetic piece; it is a \u201csocial sculpture\u201d that maps\nthe dangerous struggle of a creator standing up to an authoritarian\npower. It stands as a powerful reminder that keeping up the truth alive\nis a political act in a society that demands its citizens stay silent and\nmove on.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
